Please visit our Class Information Page for more detailed information about classes and policies. Then fill out our On-Line Form to register and we will confirm by email.

Class dates are subject to change, please contact Debby for the latest information. Please take a few minutes to check out the directions on the Facility page to Dogwood before the first night of class and feel free to call for additional directions.

Due to the unpredictability in Houston weather, we reserve the right to cancel classes if there is dangerous weather in the area. Please call the Dogwood phone number, 713-849-9115 to check on class status.

Please review the prerequisites identified for a class before enrolling and read the course description for the PREREQUISITE class. If you believe your dog’s current training meets the skills taught in our Basic Obedience Class, you may request a private with a Dogwood instructor to assess proper placement in our classes. The private with a Dogwood instructor is $40 and is payable in advance to the instructor. Assessments are ONLY available to place out of Basic Obedience. All other pre-req classes must be taken via the Dogwood classes.

Introduction to Competition – and the other classes in this series, are designed to develop the foundation skills needed for your dog to be successful in future competition venues including agility, rally, and obedience. These introductory classes provide you with games needed to build focus, drive and attention to keep your dog motivated in your training. The Intro to Comp class will teach you fun ways to teach and proof control exercises such as the sit stay as well as games to build a fast, reliable recall. Your dog will learn that you are the best game in town and to focus on you when working in distractions. You will use shaping techniques to teach your dog body awareness which is important in all performance venues whether your future is tight turns over agility jumps or turns for pivots and heeling in rally or obedience. You will learn way various ways to perform a lineup exercises to prepare your dog for competition no matter what your chosen venue. The newly learned repertoire of skills, in addition to the increased rapport between you and your dog, will help lay a good foundation for training in all venues including rally, obedience, agility and field work. Homework sheets will be given to students to compliment learning that takes place during class. This class will help you get the most out of your dog in preparation for future competition venues including agility, rally, and obedience!
Please note: this class is only offered two times a year and fills the month prior to class starting, so please enroll early.
Classes cost $135 run for 6 weeks for one hour each week.

Beginning Competition is the second class in the competition series which help build a strong foundation whether training in Rally, Agility, and/or Obedience. You will be introduced to flatwork/heel work teaching your dog to have focus and attention whether at your left or right side. We will continue to work on positional skills including the sit stay, sphinx down, and the roll down which are needed no matter what your chosen venue. Additional drive and focus games will be introduced which will keep your dog motivated and teach your dog to maintain attention on you whether you are standing beside the dog (lining up for a run) or leaving the dog (performing an agility lead-out or leaving the dog for a recall in obedience). Your dog will continue to be challenged and his abilities increased as you integrate these additional games and skills into your training sessions. The games and skills learned in this class will give you a set of tools for building and maintaining focus, drive, and attention; as all are essential for all venues; Rally, Agility, and Obedience. Whether you are training your first dog for competition or a seasoned trainer, this course will provide you with a great set of tools and foundations for training your dog. Homework sheets are provided to assist you when training away from class. Enroll in this class to continue with your dog on the road to a winning career!

beg competitionThe Beginning Competition II is the third class in the Competition series. During this session you will continue to improve the flatwork/heel work introduced in the previous class teaching your dog to have focus and attention whether walking at your left or right side. The class will include progressions on stationary exercises introduced in the previous class (sit stay, sphinx down, roll down) and your dog will learn to focus on you whether the dog is at your side or moving while in front of you. We will introduce pivots and turns teaching your dog how to properly rotate his hind-quarter while at your left or right side and still maintain proper alignment with your body. All of the skills in this class provide foundations for agility, rally, or obedience We will introduce additional games used to build drive and focus whether you plan to show in Rally, Agility, or Obedience Homework sheets are provided to assist you in training away from class.
Classes cost $135 run for 6 weeks for one hour each week.
